Happy 2012, Fellow Fractivists!
Berks Gas Truth is starting the new year with a bang! We’ve got lots to discuss at our first meeting of 2012 on Thursday, January 5th at 7 p.m. in Kutztown at the Noble School, 234 East Main Street, behind St. Barnabas.
Just a few things from the agenda…
DEP Secretary Michael Krancer has two upcoming appearances in the suburban Phila in the coming weeks. We’d like to be there to welcome him.
And speaking of our welcoming committee, we’d like to welcome our legislators back from their long holiday break on January 17th with the message that the people who live with fracking every day never get a break and that the impact fee bill cannot strip local governments from their ability to protect those people.
We’re also going to be hosting Deborah Rogers here in Kutztown on January 26th. She’ll be speaking on the economics of drilling.
We’ve also been working with the Lehigh Valley Sierra Club to organize a big anti-fracking expo on March 16th and 17th at Northampton Community College. Lots of info to share about that event.
Of course, the 2012 campaign season is already underway, so we should talk about the upcoming elections and one local candidate in particular, our own Bill Bispels.
Patti Rose proposed to the Occupy Reading group this week that they take up the issue of fracking and the group agreed unanimously. We’ll discuss ways our groups can work together. Thanks, Patti!
Chuck Brown tells me that the new Connecting the Dots feature by Dory Hippauf in Commonsense2 is a huge hit! He’ll provide a CS2 update and would love more fracking-related submissions.
Chuck’s also the one who suggested that we plan one action or event a month this year at our last meeting. We’ll ask for volunteers to take responsibility for planning one month’s action or event.
Over the holidays, Judith Smet-Weiss, Patti Rose, and I met to discuss bylaws as a first step to becoming a 501(c)3. We’ll review where that project stands. In the meantime, I’ll ask that Patti Rose be voted to serve as Treasurer. She’s offered to do it and I’d rather not be the only one on our bank account. We can have a more formal election when we’ve got bylaws passed, but we really need to have someone on the account now.
How will we get this and more done? Well, we’re going to start running our meetings using Roberts Rules-lite to structure the meeting (and to help us toward our goal of becoming whatever designation we decide we’d like to be). We’ll need a scribe for the meeting, so come prepared to volunteer for that role if you’re a good note taker.
Looking forward to seeing you all!
