Senate Bill 790 introduced by\nSenator Joseph Scarnati (R-25) provides other benefits to conventional\ndrillers, including a loosening of the requirements for reporting spills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The resubmission coincides with the publication of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0160412019319907?fbclid=IwAR3a4gMR9HfyeJ-g9F1fVLl3eC33AB4MMbMnSyJBjb7OnpIBH26pQIknIbE\">literature\nreview <\/a>&nbsp;in <em>Environment International<\/em> by The Endocrine Disruption Exchange\nentitled, \u201cAn integrative method for identification and prioritization of\nconstituents of concern in produced water from onshore oil and gas extraction.\u201d\nAccording to the researchers, \u201cDisposal of this wastewater is challenging, and current\nefforts to use it for crop irrigation, road de-icing, and dust suppression are\ncause for concern, given how little is known about the chemical constituents.\u201d&nbsp; Of the 1198 chemicals they looked at, 86%\nlack the toxicity data needed to complete a risk assessment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nletter addressed to Senate leaders, but copied to other legislators and the\ngovernor, comes after the bill was moved straight from the Appropriations\ncommittee to a floor vote with no debate.&nbsp;\nThe letter states, \u201cWe, the undersigned, are writing to protest your refusal to\nfollow the established process in a rush to get a win for the industry you have\ncome to believe you represent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPennsylvanians\nare getting tired of the industry\u2019s every wish being our government\u2019s command.\nFor months, we have been calling for an investigation into the alarming number\nof diagnoses of rare cancers in children in the shale fields. No response.\nInstead, our elected officials have pushed several bills, SB790 being just one,\nthat would roll back environmental protections and provide the natural gas and\npetrochemical industries with subsidies and incentives. It\u2019s a sad day when a\npublic health crisis that has already killed thirteen young people takes a back\nseat to reinstating the very kind of toxic practices that may be linked to\ntheir deaths.\u201d said <strong>Karen Feridun,\nFounder of Berks Gas Truth<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The letter\ncloses, \u201cDoing the bidding of the natural gas industry is not your job. You are\nin Harrisburg to represent the best interests of Pennsylvanians. You are\nfailing us, regularly and miserably. We call on the House to stop both SB 790\nand HB 1635 (a similar measure introduced this year).
