Senate Bill 790 introduced by Senator Joseph Scarnati (R-25) provides other benefits to conventional drillers, including a loosening of the requirements for reporting spills.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe\nletter addressed to Senate leaders, but copied to other legislators and the\ngovernor, comes after the bill was moved straight from the Appropriations\ncommittee to a floor vote with no debate. \nThe letter states, \u201cWe, the undersigned, are writing to protest your refusal to\nfollow the established process in a rush to get a win for the industry you have\ncome to believe you represent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cPennsylvanians\nare getting tired of the industry\u2019s every wish being our government\u2019s command.\nFor months, we have been calling for an investigation into the alarming number\nof diagnoses of rare cancers in children in the shale fields. No response.\nInstead, our elected officials have pushed several bills, SB790 being just one,\nthat would roll back environmental protections and provide the natural gas and\npetrochemical industries with subsidies and incentives. It\u2019s a sad day when a\npublic health crisis that has already killed thirteen young people takes a back\nseat to reinstating the very kind of toxic practices that may be linked to\ntheir deaths.\u201d said Karen Feridun,\nFounder of Berks Gas Truth<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe letter\ncloses, \u201cDoing the bidding of the natural gas industry is not your job.
